A new law here in Michigan puts the state first on record to officially direct transportation planners to consider all possible uses of streets rather than just movement of as much auto traffic as possible. The law mandates the development of "complete streets" concepts throughout the state. The complete streets concept places the safety of all users above the need to move high volumes of auto traffic. The concept will create more streets like those found Europe with planned pedestrian and cycling routes where auto speeds are reduced to increase safety.

While hardly an answer to all the problems of integrating traffic, it demonstrates that the value is changing and preoccupation with an auto dominant society is beginning to whane. Someday I'll be riding streets like this
rather than the tightrope above the traffic. Yes we have come a long way since I started in the seventy's and the guy in a pickup threw an open beer at me proclaiming I had no business on the road!
This is a shameless attempt to save the the most advanced civilization in
history from imminent self destruction by eliminating carbon emission,
dependence on foreign sources of fuel, obesity, hypertension and diabetes.
Cycling accomplishes all those things at once and helps us develop a better
understanding of ourselves, each other and our relationship to the cosmos.
Oh, horse puckey!
I like to ride bikes, have been doing it all my life.
The rest of that crap is just a fringe benefit,
and the blogosphere gives me a chance to share my interior
monologue with virtual rather than imaginary friends.
