This is a shameless attempt to save the the most advanced civilization in
history from imminent self destruction by eliminating carbon emission,
dependence on foreign sources of fuel, obesity, hypertension and diabetes.
Cycling accomplishes all those things at once and helps us develop a better
understanding of ourselves, each other and our relationship to the cosmos.

Oh, horse puckey!
I like to ride bikes, have been doing it all my life.
The rest of that crap is just a fringe benefit,
and the blogosphere gives me a chance to share my interior
monologue with virtual rather than imaginary friends.

Are we winning?

Things are starting to change a little at a time here in the middle of the US.
People are actually listening to those of us who ride bikes.
I can only hope this won't be the truth much longer.
Not only was there a successful resolution from the city council over a controversial intersection.  I received an e-mail from  MDOT via a friend telling me they are implementing Sharrows on a segment of road which has been troublesome.  It is an area of a state highway which travels through town, it is narrow, there have been several cyclists killed over the years and there is no real estate available for separate bike facilities.

They intend to add Sharrows and signage on a stretch of 3 miles and even went out on a limb to  liberally interpret the State's recommendation.  This will be the first recommended use in this area and indicates that at least they are trying to listen and accommodate.
In this town, it is not a great sea change of attitude, but the adaptation of newer techniques to help control traffic and make cycling safer while being as practical as possible.
