This is a shameless attempt to save the the most advanced civilization in
history from imminent self destruction by eliminating carbon emission,
dependence on foreign sources of fuel, obesity, hypertension and diabetes.
Cycling accomplishes all those things at once and helps us develop a better
understanding of ourselves, each other and our relationship to the cosmos.

Oh, horse puckey!
I like to ride bikes, have been doing it all my life.
The rest of that crap is just a fringe benefit,
and the blogosphere gives me a chance to share my interior
monologue with virtual rather than imaginary friends.

My broken Shimano Nexus hub III-deeper into darkness

After several days of procrastination, the innards to my Shimano Nexus hub had soaked out pretty well in solvent and could be inspected.  It appears that most everything is undamaged.   The real cause of the failure is yet to be determined but

the main parts are not cracked, broken or bent.  Even the drive side seal which had come off does not have any cracks or tears as I expected it might.  I washed everything in solvent again, scrubbed everything with an old toothbrush and rinsed it off so I could get a good look at each piece.
As things look this seems to be the culprit.
It's the retaining ring which holds the assembled mechanism together, this is the way it fell out of the housing and obviously is in no shape to retain nothing.  Consequently,  the large ring of bearings
got banged around and broke.  This has sent a great number of bearings to scurry around on their own and find their own little place in the mechanism.  I also found 5 of these little prawls
some on their retaining rings, some not.  But there are supposed to be six.  What this all  means is that further dissassembly will be necessary.  I had hoped not to take the ring gear and clutch apart but I just about have to go into the heart of darkness to make sure no more renegades are wandering about loose.
Oh Boy!

  1. Pre built wheels with an 8 spd are $320 plus shipping and tax. I only have 1 1/2 hours of actual shop time into this. I won't need it until November so I wanted to see what made the blackbox tick. Honestly, if I have to replace it, I will opt for an old Sturmey Archer 3spd from craigslist. That's all I need on my winter bike.

  2. I didn't realize they cost that much. Well worth the effort to fix.

I have a Brompton with a 3 speed Sturmey Archer + 2 speed derailleur. This is my first experience with a hub shifter and so far it's been great! I really like the ability to shift without being in motion.
