Another Amtrak opportunity.

I had a conference scheduled in Kansas City this weekend, it has nothing to do with cycling except that it's a great excuse to ride across Missouri to Saint Louis.  So I took a train from home to Chicago to KC.  Once again I had the chance to compare roll on service to the regular baggage service with the bike packed in their box.
On the trains with no baggage service, it's nice to have accommodations.  On the other hand, wrestling a bike through the narrow vestibule between cars is not as nice as rolling a bike into a box and letting them handle it.  Either way, it's a world better than the service offered by airlines.

  1. So cool. On an unrelated note: Every time I see your handlebars I revisit the question of whether I should dump the drop bars on my Bianchi Volpe. Your bike looks so great and comfortable.

  2. Those bars are an unbelievable improvement over traditional drops. I'm not sure how practical they would be on a regular road bike. The sweep back requires a longer top tube plus a longer stem. They are made in different widths and the ends could be cut down if there is too much back sweep.
